Special Saturday Morning Seminar. “Tips for Navigating the Health Care System”

September 15, 2018 @ 8:30 am - 12:00 pm

As we age our health care needs change and understanding how our health care system works to meet those needs can be confusing. We believe that a meeting to specifically address these issues would be of enormous benefit to seniors in Halton. CARP Halton Chapter will therefore be holding a special Saturday morning seminar “Tips for Navigating the Health Care System” in Oakville to meet this need.

Knowing what happens along the health care continuum is vitally important. Through our expert speakers we will follow the system and learn what to expect along the way; we will learn what we need to do and how we may have to advocate for ourselves or for our loved ones.

This will take us from family doctors/walk in clinics to the need for specialist referral. What happens if you arrive via Emergency? How do you proceed through hospital care? What is the discharge procedure and, as is often the case, how is home care arranged? What happens if long term care is required and, difficult as it may be to think about, how do you plan for end of life care?

Our seminar will be FREE to attend and will be held in the Rehearsal Hall at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Road, Oakville, on Saturday September 15th from 9.00am to 12.00pm.

Registration is required: Due to seating capacity limitations please register in advance to avoid disappointment. To register please CLICK HERE.

Our primary presenter will be Mr. Gary Hepworth. After 30 years in human resources management in the GTA Gary started a home care business with his spouse. Currently he is Principal with Hepworth & Associates, an Elder Life Planning Consulting organization.

Gary is a certified Elder Planning Counsellor and a Certified Cognitive Coach. He founded the Etobicoke Chapter of CARP and chaired it for 4 years. He is an active volunteer with Osteoporosis Canada and Alzheimer’s Association and has won many Community Service Awards primarily for his work with seniors.

Gary will provide an overview of our health care system and the importance of being prepared and educated prior to needing health care services.

He will explain common misconceptions and inconsistencies with the availability of services and how to advocate for a loved one.

He will discuss the recent changes to community care, the role of the LHIN and the differences between retirement homes and long term care homes.

He will also provide tips on how to plan ahead for your health care and accommodation needs.
