Who We Are & What We Do
The Hamilton Council on Aging (HCoA) is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 2005. We are comprised of a group of people all interested in advancing positive aging in Hamilton. Our focus is on the systemic issues that affect the aging experience and aims to address the inequities that some seniors face as they age.
There are several projects we are currently engaged in which are featured in this newsletter. The first is the Hamilton Age-Friendly Plan in which the HCoA is working with members from the city of Hamilton on 7 strategic goals. These include housing, transportation and outdoor spaces that make Hamilton a city that is easier for people to remain engaged in as they age.
In The News
Each month HCoA contributes an Op-Ed on a topic that is relevant and of interest to older persons. Other Op-Eds can be viewed on our website.
We have included an Op-Ed recently published in The Hamilton Spectator about Financial Literacy, the importance of this skill and some websites that people might find helpful to address many financial issues with which older adults need to cope.
In conjunction with the Age-Friendly Plan, the HCoA is also leading a communities-based initiative guided by people living with dementia in Hamilton and Haldimand and a multi-disciplinary team of partners. This project has been funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Dementia Community Investment Fund. It will provide the opportunity to develop, implement and evaluate programs to improve quality of life for persons living with dementia by engaging them, their care partners, families and other stakeholders within their communities.
Learn more about this unique change project and the model it is engaging to prioritize the insight and participation of people living with dementia.
Finally, led by Anne Pizzacalla and many other volunteers, HCoA provides the Positive Aging series. These are interactive workshops to enhance our efforts to age positively. In the past year, these sessions have been delivered virtually to support education about aspects of positive and healthy aging.
