For our Community meeting on June 23rd C.A.R.P. Halton Chapter will have a presentation on “Frauds and Scams” by Constable Mathew Rocca who is the Older Adult Support Officer with the Halton Region Police Service.
Fraudsters and Scammers are running rampant and alarmingly every year there is an increase in the numbers of Canadians who become victims. No one is immune but regrettably seniors are prime targets. Remember, fraudsters and scammers are clever and are coming up with new ideas all the time. Millions of dollars are lost to fraudsters every year. The more you know about frauds and scams and, more importantly, how to protect yourself, the better chance you have to avoid becoming a victim.
Constable Rocca’s presentation will highlight some of the commonly occurring frauds and scams locally and provincially, and provide some safeguarding tips to minimize the risk of financial exploitation.
Some quick facts from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC)
As of February 28, 2022 the CAFC has received 12,252 reports of fraud (106,637 reports received in 2021), identified 7,922 victims of fraud (67,724 in 2021), and confirmed a financial loss of 75.5 million dollars ($380 million dollars in 2021).
Financial exploitation affects us all, and there are straightforward strategies that we can use to mitigate the risk. The crucial factor is the investment of our time to become educated.
Please join us for this very important and informative presentation and learn all you can on how to avoid becoming a victim.
