For our Community Zoom Meeting on May 26th C.A.R.P. Halton Chapter will host a presentation on Falls Prevention. The meeting will begin at 2.00pm. Details on how to join the meeting are provided below.
According to the Government of Canada website falls are a leading cause of injury among Canadian seniors with about a quarter of seniors experiencing one or more falls per year. Falls cause 95% of hip fractures and are the cause of 85% of senior’s injury related hospitalizations. Half of all falls causing hospitalization happen at home. And as we age, our risk of falling increases.
The good news is that understanding what causes them and by taking steps to protect yourself falls can be prevented. Our speaker is an expert on this subject. We will be delighted to welcome Nancy Edwards, RN (non-practising), PhD, FCAHS. Nancy is Professor Emerita and Distinguished Professor, University of Ottawa, and is a C.A.R.P. Ottawa Board Member and Chair of the Fall Prevention Working Group. Nancy’s presentation will focus on:
Being Proactive About Fall Prevention: What’s the Built Environment Got To Do With It?
The built environment contributes to about one third of all falls. Yet many seniors blame themselves, and more specifically something about their health status or behaviour as the primary reasons for their falls. Nancy will explain how the built environment contributes to injurious falls and what changes you can make to your environment to reduce your risk. This webinar will be of particular interest to seniors who want to age in place including those who may be considering home modifications and/or renovations.
Please join us for this very important and informative presentation and learn all you can on how to prevent a fall .
