CARP Halton Chapter Community Meetings in March –  “Empowering Dementia Friendly Communities”

CARP Halton Chapter will be holding two community meetings in March, one in Halton North on March 8th and one in Halton South on March 23rd.  Our Halton North meeting will be held at the Revera Birkdale Retirement Living Residence at 611 Farmstead (Derry and Farmstead) in Milton. Our Halton South meeting will be held at the Seniors Centre at 2285 New Street, Burlington.

The theme of our presentation at both locations will be  “Empowering Dementia Friendly Communities”

Our presenters are Phyllis Fehr and Wendy Renault from the Empowering Dementia Friendly Communities Hamilton and Haldimand project.

  • How friendly, or inclusive, is your community for people who have dementia?
  • Do you really know what dementia is?

It is sometimes easier to ignore or distance ourselves from people who have dementia, it may be uncomfortable. There is a lot of stigma. Knowing the basics can help:

  • What is dementia?
  • What is community?
  • How can we all work together to make our communities more inclusive of people who have dementia?

Phyllis and Wendy will provide an overview of dementia and the human rights of people who have dementia. First-hand perspectives and experiences will be provided. Questions and discussion are welcome. We will learn from people who have dementia what is needed to make our communities more inclusive and friendly, and get some quick tips for changes that we can make in our environments right now.

Our Milton meeting will be held on Wednesday March 8th at the Revera Birkdale Retirement Living Residence at 611 Farmstead (Derry and Farmstead) in Milton.

Our Burlington meeting will be held on Thursday March 23rd at the Seniors Centre at 2285 New Street.

Doors will open at both locations at 6.30pm, the program will start at 7.00pm and will wrap up around 8.45pm

At the Milton location most visitors will be able to park in the visitor parking areas on site. Additional street parking is also available on Farmstead. As this is a seniors residence it is expected that masks will be required. Although requirements may change, it is anticipated that a COVID test prior to entry into the building will not be needed.

Refreshments, coffee, tea and treats will be provided at both meetings by Revera and we thank the management and staff for their generosity.

Our meetings will begin with a short welcoming address and a brief update on your C.A.R.P. Halton Chapter activities. This will be followed by our featured presentation.

There will be a break at the midway point which will allow time to socialize with fellow members and to visit our sponsors. We encourage you to chat with our sponsors and learn about the services they provide.

Our sponsors at Burlington will be:
