Mental Health Matters! Benefits of Art Therapy

Every month CARP Halton will feature a Mental Health segment. This segment will feature agencies, groups, presentations, articles, tips and more to enrich your Mental Health whether it is having the blues or being anxious or being in crisis.

Let’s explore art therapy and its benefits:

Art therapy can be used to support treatment for a wide range of physical and mental health conditions. It has been linked to benefits including improved self-awareness, social connection and emotional regulation, while lowering levels of distress, anxiety and even pain scores.

Mental health has recently been identified as a serious public health concern. Mental diseases encompass symptoms, from minor anxiety to severe forms like behavioural abnormalities. Art therapy refers to various treatments, such as theatre therapy, dance movement psychotherapy, body psychotherapy, music therapy, and drawing, painting and craft therapy. Art therapy uses artistic means to treat mental illnesses and improve mental health. Art has become a significant element of the therapeutic sector and is used in several recovery and treatment procedures. Art therapy uses integrative techniques to captivate the soul, body and mind in ways that verbal expression alone doesn’t appear to. Art therapy is gaining popularity in mental health settings because it provides a recovery-oriented, person-centred approach that includes emotional, spiritual, social needs and clinical demands.
