There’s No Place Like Home: Home Safety for Care Partners
Over 95% of Canadian adults aged 65 and older report that they want to remain at home as long as possible as they age. As the focus of our health care system shifts away from the institutional/hospital setting and more towards a ‘home first’ approach to care, preparing the home for the changes that come with aging and/or a chronic, progressive condition is becoming increasingly important.
This session will cover:
- The importance of home safety planning
- Falls and falls prevention
- How aging and medical conditions impact home safety
- Simple indoor and outdoor modifications to enhance safety
- Emergency planning

Safe Moving and Handling for Family Caregivers
As age or health conditions progress, we often notice changes in the ability of our care receivers to move around the home safely and independently. Decreasing mobility can make it challenging for caregivers to find ways to safely adapt the care routine and keep themselves and the person they are caring for free from falls or other injuries.
This workshop will explore ways to support individuals with changes in mobility. Participants will learn how to:
- recognize changes in ability requiring more support
- utilize good body mechanics and reduce injury risk
- avoid unsafe moving and handling techniques
- choose from safer options to assist with mobility
