The words we use can make such an impact. This idea of “flipping language” to humanize people living with dementia is long overdue. For example, instead of saying someone “refused to,” you say “chose not to.” Instead of “feeding,” you say “assisting/supporting with meal.”

The outcome of the study where they piloted this initiative was that “flipping language was perceived to promote a care environment that was enabling for staff to connect with residents, families and other staff, facilitating personalised and relational care.”
