RLC: Family Caregiver Sessions Summer 2026

Managing Behaviors Related to Dementia

Tuesday, July 14, 2026

Dementia can change the way a person communicates, expresses their needs, and interacts with the world around them. Behaviors that may seem confusing, frustrating or challenging are often meaningful forms of communication and can provide important clues about a person’s unmet needs, emotions, or environment.

Join us for this one-hour session to better understand the behaviours that can accompany dementia and discover practical approaches for responding with confidence and compassion.

Participants will learn about:

  • practical strategies to improve communication, reduce stress, and foster more positive interactions for both the person living with dementia and their care partner
  • the emotional impact of caregiving
  • ways to support care partner well-being

Date: Tuesday, July 14, 2026

Time: 11 am to 12 pm

Location: Zoom

This session  will be facilitated by a Public Education Coordinator form the Alzheimer Society of Brant, Haldimand Norfolk, Hamilton, Halton.

CARERS (Coaching, Advocacy, Respite, Education and Relationship Simulation) Program

Tuesdays, August 4 to September 29, 2026

They’ve asked you the same question for the tenth time today, or maybe they’re refusing help with something that used to be easy. You want to respond with patience, but in that moment, you’re not sure what to say or do anymore.

Every day brings new challenges when caring for a loved one with dementia.

You’re not alone – and you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

Led by a trained clinician from the Alzheimer Society, this eight-week, evidence-based workshop provides an opportunity for participants to share, connect and learn practical skills and emotional supports alongside others in a supportive, small-group setting.

Sessions will focus on:

  • practical and emotional supports needed to care for people living with dementia
  • problem solving techniques
  • communication skills through the use of simulation
  • strategies for keeping a meaningful relationship with the person living with dementia

This workshop is for adult children/siblings, friends/neigbours caring for a parent/ sibling/friend/neighbour with a dementia diagnosis (not suitable for care partners in LTC). Individual assessment is required prior to group enrollment.

Date: Tuesdays, August 4 to September 29, 2026

Beyond Basic Care: Meaningful Engagement and Brain Health in Everyday Life

Tuesday, August 11, 2026

Neurological conditions, including dementia, affect far more than memory. Caring can become challenging, especially when it becomes harder to communicate or engage in everyday activities. But meaningful moments of connection are still possible.

For family caregivers supporting a person living with dementia, understanding how to foster meaningful interaction can help reduce frustration, strengthen relationships, and create more positive and fulfilling moments together.

This one hour online session will cover:

  • how neurological conditions affect the brain
  • the limitations of task-focused care
  • why meaningful engagement supports quality of life
  • practical strategies to maintain abilities and independence
  • accessible engagement solutions for every budget

Date: Tuesday, August 11, 2026

Time: 11 am to 12 pm

Location: Zoom

This session will be facilitated by Elizabeth Taylor, Registered Social Service Worker and Executive Director at Evermore Specialty Care.
