CARP Halton Chapter Community Meetings in April – “Elder Abuse, It’s Not Right”

CARP Halton Chapter will be holding two community meetings in March, one in Halton North on April 12th and one in Halton South on April 27th.  Our Halton North meeting will be held at the Revera Birkdale Retirement Living Residence at 611 Farmstead (Derry and Farmstead) in Milton. Our Halton South meeting will be held at the Seniors Centre at 2285 New Street, Burlington.

The theme of our presentation at both locations will be:

“Elder Abuse: Risk factors, recognizing what it is and how to protect yourself”

It is estimated that about 1 in 10 older adults in Ontario (one would be bad enough but that’s over 200,000 Ontario seniors) suffer some form of abuse. With such a shockingly large number of victims it is essential that we understand the various forms of abuse, the risk factors to be on the look out for, and more importantly how to prevent elder abuse from happening. CARP Halton Chapter will be privileged to welcome two experts in this field as quest speakers at our April community meetings.

Our speakers will be Heather Thompson MSc. Aging and Health, Halton Elder Abuse Prevention Network and Shahzi Bokhari, Community Engagement Lead, Connection in Action Initiative, Community Development Halton. The presentation will be in two parts: Heather will talk about

 Elder Abuse: It’s Not Right

  • Understanding types of abuse
  • Risk factors and warning signs of elder abuse
  • What to do if an older adult is being abused
  • Resources and supports available

This will be followed by Shahzi who will discuss

Connection in Action Initiative

You will learn how the Connection in Action Initiative supports older adults (55+) living in Halton, by increasing awareness of opportunities for social connections, reducing isolation and loneliness.

Please plan to join us at either location. Elder Abuse is a serious problem. CARP Halton Chapter believes that the information you will take away from this meeting is essential for all seniors. We look forward to seeing our members and friends for this vitally important presentation.

Our Milton meeting will be held on Wednesday April 12th at the Revera Birkdale Retirement Living Residence at 611 Farmstead (Derry and Farmstead) in Milton.

Our Burlington meeting will be held on Thursday April 27th at the Seniors Centre at 2285 New Street.

Doors will open at both locations at 6.30pm, the program will start at 7.00pm and will wrap up around 8.45pm

At the Milton location most visitors will be able to park in the visitor parking areas on site. Additional street parking is also available on Farmstead. As this is a seniors residence it is expected that masks will be required.

Refreshments, coffee, tea and treats will be provided at both meetings by Revera and we thank the management and staff for their generosity.

Our meetings will begin with a short welcoming address and a brief update on your CARP Halton Chapter activities. This will be followed by our featured presentation.

There will be a break at the midway point which will allow time to socialize with fellow members and to visit our sponsors. We encourage you to chat with our sponsors and learn about the services they provide.

Our sponsors at Burlington will be:
