Care partners are often unsure whether the cognitive changes they are noticing are part of normal aging or signs of something more serious. It can be difficult to determine when a situation is unsafe and if caregivers should start playing a bigger role in decision-making. Understanding the legal and clinical framework around capacity can help reduce uncertainty, prevent conflict, and support informed decisions before challenges escalate.
This one hour session will provide adult children, spouses, caregivers and advocates with a better understanding of capacity assessment, Power of Attorney and guardianship options. Attendees will gain clarity and practical guidance for navigating difficult decisions and conversations when changes in loved ones appear.
This workshop will cover:
- How to recognize when someone may need support with decisions related to personal care or property, and when poor judgment may still be considered legally capable
- What a formal capacity assessment involves, who conducts it, and the associated costs
- How to plan ahead, including creating a Power of Attorney for Property and Personal Care
- What options are available to protect a loved one who becomes incapable without prior planning
This session will be facilitated by Dan Silver, Registered Social Worker, psychotherapist and capacity assessor.
